All About Collagen

Collagen has fast become one of the most popular health supplements we sell at wholefoods. And that’s not from any promotion on our end! People have heard about the benefits, or have tried it and seen some themselves, and keep coming back for more.

Yet questions remain for many…

What is collagen? What benefit could I get from taking it? Does it really do anything?
And what’s the difference between all the types?

So we thought we’d do a little summary for you, which may help you decide what benefits you may get from this food based supplement.

What is collagen?

Collagen is a major component of connective tissues, such as skin, bones, tendons, and ligaments. It provides structural support and helps maintain the strength and elasticity of these tissues.

Collagen supplements are typically derived from animal sources, such as bovine (cow) or marine (fish) collagen. They come in various forms, including powders, capsules, and liquids. These supplements are often marketed for their potential benefits in promoting skin health, reducing joint pain, and improving hair and nail strength.

Comprised mostly of protein, collagen is also a great option for those needing to increase protein (and thereby decrease ghrelin, the hormone responsible for feelings of hunger).

What are the different types of collagen?

There are different types of collagen found in our bodies, each with a different purpose. Over 80% of our collagen is made up of the following three types (which are also those found in supplements);

  1. Type I Collagen: This is the most abundant type of collagen in the body and is found in the skin, bones, tendons, and connective tissues. It provides strength and support to these structures.
  2. Type II Collagen: This type of collagen is primarily found in cartilage, which cushions and protects joints. It helps maintain joint flexibility and mobility.
  3. Type III Collagen: Type III collagen is often found alongside type I collagen and provides structural support to organs, muscles, and blood vessels. It is commonly found in the walls of blood vessels and the intestines.

Some of the general benefits associated with collagen supplementation:

  1. Skin health: Collagen is a major component of the skin, providing structure, elasticity, and hydration. Supplementing with collagen may help improve skin elasticity, reduce wrinkles, and promote a more youthful appearance.
  2. Joint health: Collagen is a key component of cartilage, which cushions and supports joints. Some studies suggest that collagen supplementation may help reduce joint pain and improve joint function in individuals with conditions like osteoarthritis.
  3. Bone health: Collagen is also present in bones and contributes to their strength and structure. Some research suggests that collagen supplementation may help improve bone mineral density and reduce the risk of conditions like osteoporosis.
  4. Hair and nail health: Collagen is a building block for hair and nails. Supplementing with collagen may help strengthen hair and nails, promote growth, and reduce brittleness.
  5. Gut health: Collagen contains amino acids that support the integrity of the gut lining. Some studies suggest that collagen supplementation may help improve gut health by reducing inflammation and promoting gut barrier function.

Which do we recommend?

It’s important to note that the specific types and ratios of collagen in supplements can vary. Different brands may offer different combinations or focus on specific types of collagen based on their intended benefits. The following is a summary of the most commonly found (and researched) ones, which we choose to stock in store.

VERISOL® is one patented type of bovine collagen. It has been shown to target the structural integrity of the skin, and can reduce the appearance of fine lines and cellulite. It specifically stimulates Type I and Type III collagen in our bodies.

Type I and III collagen are also found in Great Lakes Collagen Peptides

NATICOL® is a marine collagen. It has been shown to stimulate both type I and Type II much the same as Verisol®, and can thereby improve the structure of skin, hair and nails.

FORTIGEL® is another type of collagen peptide from both bovine and marine sources. It specifically stimulates Type II collagen in our bodies, and has been shown to aid the regeneration of joint cartilage.

What about Gelatin?

I’m glad you asked! Collagen and gelatin are both derived from animal sources and are similar in composition and nutrient profile.

Natural Gelatin, is derived from collagen through a process of partial hydrolysis. It is a protein-rich substance that is obtained by boiling collagen-rich animal tissues, such as skin, bones, and connective tissues.

Whilst less popular (and less researched) than collagen, Gelatin can also be used as a supplement. Because it is broken down, many people find it easier to digest than collagen, and it is therefore recommended for those with digestive issues and in treating conditions such as leaky gut.

Gelatin also has unique properties that make it useful in culinary applications. When dissolved in hot water and cooled, it forms a gel-like substance, giving foods a smooth and jiggly texture. This is why it is a popular component of health ‘jellies’, and a great way of getting some additional protein and collagen into little ones! But perhaps why it’s not quite as popular at Collagen (as it’s harder to sneak into things or to mix and drink on it’s own)…

DIY ALTERNATIVES?


An alternative to all of this, is something you can make yourself… Bone broth!

Rich in both collagen and gelatin, it’s a traditional and popular means of getting all the above benefits directly from your food. There are plenty of straightforward and delicious recipes available online.
The most important part, is the quality of the ingredients you’re putting in there.

If you can’t justify going organic for the whole lot then I do urge you to prioritize it for the meat and bones, and use regular vegetables and herbs if you need.
